Festival of Trees #14

For my Festival of Trees offering this month, I made some desktop wallpapers with a small calendar in one corner of the wallpaper image. Click on any of these images for a larger, downloadable wallpaper file. Depending on your system and browser, you can usually right-click the large photo and save as "desktop" ... or right click > save, then make the photo your desktop when that month rolls around.

Thanks for looking and please enjoy these calendars.

Please remember all images on here are copyrighted by Maureen Shaughnessy, with permission for your personal use only. Thank you for respecting my copyright.

If you love trees, and want to tell other people about it, please head over to the Festival of Trees coordinating blog to find out how to participate in the next festival. Click here:Festival of the Trees

I will be hosting Festival #15 for the month of September, at Raven's Nest (aka Water Earth Wind and Fire) ... so check back here around the 1st of September to see more about trees from all over the world.

Photoblog Awards

My friend, Meg Nakagawa kindly submitted Land of Little Rain for a photoblog award. Thank you, Meg.

If you are a regular reader of Land of Little Rain -- and you think it deserves more votes, please head over here and vote for this as one of your favorite photoblogs. I'd sure appreciate it. :o}

You can also submit/nominate/vote for other photoblogs you like. Like Ben's Sketchbook. Or Lachezar's photoblog. I'm going to sit down with a cup of tea and browse through some of the other photoblogs on the awards website, when I have more time. (huh? time? what's that?)

our hops vines have almost completely covered the west side of the porch, creating a cool private place to sit on hot summer evenings.

Seek shade

Hangout, originally uploaded by MontanaRaven.

I am a shade-seeker, though I love the concept of sun. If I have a choice between sitting in the sun and sitting in the shade, I almost always choose shade...

We Know Each Other by Heart

My brother, Peter Shaughnessy, makes wood and mixed media sculptural "boxes" that often have human characteristics and always embody a human motive, emotion, circumstance ... life. He made the box (above right) as a wedding gift for Tim and me. If you like his artwork as much as I do and are interested in seeing more, please visit Peter's website.

Balance

Evening, originally uploaded and copyright by Lawrence Wright

A photo from my friend, Lawrence Wright (aka northdevonfarmer) motivated me to write a longer-than-usual comment on his Flickr photo, because it reminds me of how much I love the way we humans make art out of seemingly ordinary objects, everyday emotions or simply the impulse to create:

perhaps along the way
you see a stone,
your creative mind sees more
than stone

you pick it up
handle the stone's weight, its' heft
feel its' shape, the smooth roundness
you look around,
see a pointed stone nearby
your imagination sees the two
together
in such a way that you
transform both stones -- and more:
you change their context,
the environment in which they exist

and when you leave, there is
a balance struck
between these two simple old shapes
and the air and
the earth beneath them
waiting for the next passerby to see
and understand
and delight
and imagine

Photo Friday: Busy

Busy, Copyright by Maureen Shaughnessy

Gabe and his friends Kyle and Jack began the demolition of an existing landscape for one of my clients, two years ago. They removed a waist-high raised bed that occupied about one third of the space as well as a dilapidated fence, unsafe deck, and huge dumpster full of rocks, clay, weeds and dead shrubs. The result of our last two years of off-and-on work on this site is a peaceful, private garden. I have been enjoying documenting the garden's progress on my garden blog Raven's Nest.
